SUNDAY PRAYER, cxxiv

time & time again

the holes will close up by themselves

as soon as you take the rings out

put the peace sign down, and sing no more,

and toil. reach your hands into the soil

reel in this endless earthworm

as he squirms against your hands

as if you were his hourglass and he

was your grain of sand

time & time again

the check will come on friday

put the garbage out on tuesday

cut the grass on sunday

with your teeth. clean everything.

don't forget to feed the washing machine.

what a sad and lovely waltz is this

a trick candle, our little life

of little risk.

but you're a birthday

deep with the dayshine

from dusk to moonbreak

the dust of keepsakes

time & time again, i am i am
