SUNDAY PRAYER, cxxix

time & time again

the long, hot summer ended

with a slow and gracious rain

waitress pretty, plump and plain

"did you hear?," her makeup running,

"newman's dead at eighty-something"

someone up there liked him so

they plucked him like the perfect rose

he was, he was

time & time again

the fall starts its descent

with a slow, persistent rain

that drums on roofs and window panes

another week down

another old man in the ground

we coulda seen it coming

newman's dead

at eighty-something

but you're a birthday

deep with the dayshine

from dusk to moonbreak

the dust of keepsakes

time & time again, i am i am
