SUNDAY PRAYER, clxxviii
(performed by Brooks Strause)
time & time again
i was the firebreather's friend, because
when the plagues first came
he gave blood. who will take no
for an answer when the chooser comes?
i was his friend because
when love first burst through his door
he gave way. and said,
"stay."
time & time again
but it will never be enough.
when the cracks crawl up her back
firebreather, i will be there
when the doubt begins to boil
when the spoils of joy have spoiled
this is my handle, this is my spout
let us in, breather of fire,
let her out
but you're a birthday,
deep with the dayshine
from dusk to moonbreak,
the dust of keepsakes
time & time again, i am i am
