SUNDAY PRAYER, clxxxvii
time & time again
you taught an old dog a new trick
or two, didn't you? man's best friend
is woman when she tricks you
into quieting your heart
she says, pick a card, any card.
you work too hard. in life
we are more than the cards we draw
you are, you are.
time & time again
over clean hands under dirty fists
if all of this is pointless,
if all i make will be erased,
and i will be replaced.
then i am content, as whitman said,
to have contributed a verse.
and a pretty one i think,
if poorly rehearsed,
i am. i am.
you are a birthday,
deep with the dayshine
from dusk to moonbreak,
the dust of keepsakes
time & time again, i am i am
