SUNDAY PRAYER, cxcvii
time & time again, where
do i stand if not beside myself?
beside you til some sweeter end
the firebreather's friend, with her
cafe smile as an electric fence
her heart a rhombus padlock
whose combination she's forgotten
on the orchard floor with the apples rotten
time & time again,
and it is me who is the scarecrow there
watching as the apples grow
watching her go from row to row
we who look not up but down
see only what has hit the ground
and though the low things do exist
look up, look up, so sweet is this.
i am, i am.
but you're a birthday,
deep with the dayshine
from dusk to moonbreak,
the dust of keepsakes
time & time again, i am i am
