SUNDAY PRAYER, ccxix
(performed by Simon Joyner)
time & time again
i was the fire breather's friend
like the trained hands of the tradesman bend
a thin wire with a pair of pliers
to produce a copper maze of loops
and coils as the gold sun droops
and spoils against the velvet red
crushing clouds, the wire said
i am, i am
time & time again
the trick candle on a birthday cake
the fox you see and scare away
if dad's dad were alive today
would he take the toys out of his hands
and go to hold his little boy
parade upon parade of magic
nylon flower, wire and fabric
i am, i am
but you are a birthday,
deep with the dayshine
from dusk to moonbreak,
the dust of keepsakes
time & time again, i am i am
