SUNDAY PRAYER, ccxxii
time & time again
i get all turned around sometimes
and if when after i've retraced
each solitary step i made
i am still lost in every church
in every aged book i search
my ancient conscience for direction
to hidden places past detection
i am
time & time again
my conscience led me into whirlpools
& my captain's wheel went round and round
pour a ladder down your mouth.
descend, it said, and when you've gone
a thousand miles to reach the dawn
take a right at the morning light
and follow it as it turns
into noon & night
but you are a birthday,
deep with the dayshine
from dusk to moonbreak,
the dust of keepsakes
time & time again, i am i am
