SUNDAY PRAYER, cclxxvii
time & time again
he snapped his fingers next to his ear
when he was struggling to remember something
and he wouldn't wear his wedding ring
around beautiful women, though he was true
like any intelligent dog would be, to you
children and animals irritated him
he'd have had them all pushed over the rim
of the world if he could
time & time again
the cat stares at him from the piano bench
another expensive and useless piece of property
birthdays were a conspiracy, of course
a waste of money, he was quick to say
but the few cards that ever were sent him he saved
and he remembered the names of all of your far-flung cousins
he even prayed at your grave, and he did it for nothing.
you are a birthday
deep with the dayshine
from dusk to moonbreak
the dust of keepsakes
time & time again, i am i am
